How Does Invisalign Work?

Many people want straighter teeth, but don’t want the “train track” look and discomfort brought by conventional metal braces.

If you are one of those, you may want to consider Invisalign.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign Miranda clear aligners are virtually invisible, do not have metal and are custom-made for your teeth. They work in a series of trays that shift your teeth into place gradually.

So, how does Invisalign really work?

After a check-up and consultation to ensure you’re a good candidate for Invisalign, your Miranda dentist will custom fit you for a series of clear, BPA-free plastic aligners. These aligners require usage of at least 20–22 hours per day.

Each tray is made so the teeth are slightly straighter than they were with the previous tray. The teeth will typically move up to 0.25 mm each tray.

Every two weeks, you will receive a new set, gradually moving your teeth to their ideal position.

Simply wear the trays, and you’re ready to go! No uncomfortable and unsightly brackets necessary.

Invisalign clear aligners are barely noticeable, which makes them perfect for adults and teens who want a more discreet straightening option.

Although aligners alone are enough in most cases, some treatment plans may also involve placing raised “buttons” to the teeth to give them more grip—an alteration that makes them slightly more obvious, at least closeup.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Length of treatment with Invisalign depends on you, the current position of your teeth, and how your teeth need to be corrected to achieve proper alignment.

An average adult Invisalign treatment lasts at least 12 months but teen treatment times may vary a little more.

To keep your treatment on schedule and efficient, maintain oral hygiene and follow your dentist’s wear and care instructions.

One of the many amazing benefits of Invisalign is that appointments are shorter and further apart than with conventional metal braces because there are no wire adjustments made.

Usually, the treatment progress will be observed by your dentist every four to six weeks.

How about special occasions or playing sports?

Since Invisalign is made to be removable, it is perfectly fine to take out your aligners for a special night or event.

Or if you play contact sports that require a mouthguard, you can simply replace your aligners with the mouthguard while you play.

If your sports activity does not require a mouthguard, an extra advantage to Invisalign is that it allows you to continue wearing your aligners without worrying about sharp brackets or wire ends cutting your mouth.
